ECONOMYNEXT- Sri Lanka had produced 30.38 million kilograms of tea in May 2021, up 5.8 percent or 1.77 million higher from 28.60 million kilograms a year earlier, industry data showed.
Sri Lanka produced a total of 30.1 million kilos of black tea, up by 1.6 million kilos from a year ago year while total green tea grew 0.2 million kilos to 0.1 million in May 2020.
In the five months to May 2021 Sri Lanka had produced 134.72 million kilograms up 30.6 percent from
103.11 million kilograms a year earlier, data from Ceylon Tea Brokers showed.
Tea production fell sharply in March and April 2020, due to Coronavirus lockdowns.
Total orthodox production for May 2021 was 27.4 million kilograms up from 26 million kilograms a year earlier.
Total CTC production in May rose to 2.76 million kilograms up from 2.41 million kilograms a year ago.
High Grown production gained 0.39 million kilograms to 7.2 million while Medium Growns production fell 0.06 million kilograms from a year ago to 6.0 million kilograms. Low Growns showed an increase of one million kilograms in May to 17.2 million kilos.
Low Growns made up 56.9 percent of the total in May while High Growns made up 23.6 percent and Mid Growns made up 15.5 percent.
