Jayantha Edirisinghe, Commissioner of Ceylon Tea Board, informed the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday (03) that the B 60 program introduced by the Ceylon Tea Board to raise the quality of tea buds was implemented from January 01.
These facts were revealed in a discussion held yesterday (03) under the patronage of the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, to find out whether the B 60 scheme, which is being implemented with the aim of increasing the quality of tea buds, has been enforced on January 01st.
Under this B 60 scheme, it is essential that 60 percent of the harvested tea leaves consist of young leaves. This scheme is being implemented with the aim of increasing the quality of tea produced in this country, and the tea commissioner has informed the management of the all tea factories making it mandatory for every tea factory to implement this policy from January 1st.
By implementing this policy, the annual production of tea in this country will increase by 90 million kilograms and it will be possible to reduce the retention of refuse tea to 07 percent.
Although the amount of Refused Tea in the tea produced in general is 07 percent, it can rise up to 17 percent in the non-implementation of the B 60 program. The reason is that the industrialists have to pick the matured tea leaves.
In order to reduce this situation, tea leaves should be harvested once every week and under this B 60 program, the yield of leaves that can be harvested from one tea garden increases by 20 percent.
By improving the quality of tea, the tea plantation owners can earn more income and thereby provide more privileges for the workers.
Tea Commissioner Jayantha Edirisinghe also said that if any tea factory deliberately disrupts the implementation of the B 60 scheme, steps will be taken to cancel the registration license of that tea factory. The powers for that have been delegated to the Commissioner by the Tea Board Act.
