Could it be time to turn over a new leaf?
Put down your kombucha, people -- if you want to make the most of your health and stay hydrated as the weather heats up, your drink of choice should probably be tea.
Yep, the humble cuppa has many health benefits you may not know about -- herbal teas have been used as natural remedies for a variety of ailments for hundreds of years and science has begun to find evidence supporting some of the traditional uses of herbal teas, as well as some new uses.
Consuming caffeine moderately -- ie not by having five double espressos every day but instead drinking tea -- is said to provide a load of health benefits -- from helping get rid of colds, to keeping diabetes at bay and delivering a big dose of antioxidants.
Tea can also dramatically impact your immune system, making it much stronger. If recent studies are to be believed, the antioxidants found in a single cup of tea -- which help in cell regeneration and repair -- are about five times more than an average fruit or vegetable. Your afternoon cuppa may well help your overall health and wellness by keeping flu and diseases at bay, helping you fight stress and keep your fitness levels in check.
Moderate consumption of tea on a daily basis provides as much hydration as water with all its added benefits. Herbal teas are even better as they have no caffeine in them.
Need more convincing?
"Tea and herbal blends have an unlimited amount of benefits for your health," agreed the experts at Sydney's T Totaler Tea Bar. "Depending on the tea they can also sooth digestion, are anti inflammatory, high in vitamins and can detoxify your body naturally."
Black tea is rich in tannins, which are known to possess anti-inflammatory properties. Not only does it help with an upset stomach, but also regular consumption of black tea creates an environment for better digestion in your body.
"White tea is usually the least processed tea so it is packed full of flavonoids such as catechins and polyphenols," T Totaler told ten daily, "and has high antioxidant properties in the body."
And don't get us started on the benefits of green tea.
Well, okay then, do.
Green tea contains polyphenols that help to ease the inflammation caused to intestines due to IBS. Also if you drink green tea, you can be also be assured that your cholesterol levels will be lower. This is due to the fact that it dramatically lowers the LDL and triglyceride levels in the body. In addition to this, HDL, which is known as the good cholesterol, increases with green tea consumption. If that wasn't enough, green tea is a good way to stop getting food poisoning because it's rich in catechin -- the substance that gives it its distinctive bitter taste. The bacteria known to cause food poisoning can't survive when catechin is around.'
Take that, Bali belly.
Oh, and tea is rich in certain elements like polysaccharides and catechin, which can greatly affect the blood sugar levels, keeping them low. This helps keep diabetes at bay. Green tea, in particular, has a much higher level of polyphenols, thereby massively reducing your chances of developing type 2 diabetes by encouraging a healthy and normal functioning of insulin.

Other teas to look out for include:
Oolong tea
"This is semi-fermented and reduces inflammation in the digestive tract so aids in digestion," said the experts at T Totaler.
Matcha green tea
"This stone ground tea from Japan is packed full of antioxidants and is a natural energy boost as you drink the entire leaves." Matcha lattes are a great alternative if you want to stop drinking coffee but still need the energy boost.
Rose tea
High in Vitamin C, this delicious brew can help maintain healthy and radiant skin and fight off the unwanted flu.
Chamomile
Has calming and soothing properties to help get a peaceful night's rest.
Lemon tea
Constant coughing and sneezing can cause swelling of the throat. Drinking lemon tea helps contract this passage, which helps ease the symptoms.
If you want to make the best cuppa of your life, T Totaler's tea makers suggest you follow these simple rules: "Tea is best enjoyed being loose leaf rather than in a tea bag as it’s better for the environment plus the quality is higher so there are better benefits for your health. Black tea / herbal blends should be brewed at 100 degrees, green tea 80 degrees and white tea 70 degrees. We generally use the rule of 1 teaspoon per 200 mls brewed for 3 minutes to give a good cup of tea. There are so many types of tea so brew times and dosages will vary -- it's all up to your personal taste."
Bottoms up!
