Over 13 tea factories that have been found to have mixed sugar during tea production have been shut over the past two to three months, claimed Minister of Plantation Industries, Navin Dissanayake.
Addressing the âWewili Sawiyaâ annual awards ceremony of the Tea Small Holdings Development Authority held yesterday (24) in Colombo, he said guidelines regarding tea production standards have to be strictly adhered to by tea factories. Dissanayake added that tea factories will be monitored by the Tea Inspection Board.
He further said factories that were shutdown will not be re-opened under political pressure while saying that a Governorâs request to re-open a tea factory was turned down as such activities results in the drop in the quality of tea not merely affecting the tea industry but also the estate workers. Small scale tea businesses that contribute immensely to the economy finally have to bear the loss.
