Tea exports for the month of March 2023 totalled 17.97 M/Kgs, showing a decrease of 5.20 M/Kgs vis-à-vis 23.17 M/Kgs of March 2022. Tea in bulk has shown a substantial decrease, whilst packeted tea has shown a significant increase and to a lesser extent tea bags when compared to March 2022.
However FOB value of Rs. 2,018.87 in March 2023 records an increase of Rs. 973.73 YoY compared to Rs. 1,045.14 of March 2022. FOB value of USD 6.10 in March 2023 records the highest ever FOB value for a calendar month in USD terms surpassing the previous best of USD 5.74 recorded in October 2022. This records a gain of USD 1.97 YoY when compared to USD 4.13 of March 2022.
Meanwhile Türkiye has emerged as the No. 1 major importer of Ceylon Tea with an increase of 102% YoY in January-March 2023. Iraq which has decreased its imports by 54% YoY has secured the second position followed by Russia with a decline of 0.9% YoY. U.A.E. has moved down to the fourth position having decreased imports by 27% YoY.
Libya has secured the fifth position having decreased imports by 25% YoY. Other notable importers are China, Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Germany.
