The government is planning to increase its tea exports to European countries in the near future, Plantation Industries Secretary J A Ranjith said.
This decision had been taken since Sri Lanka’s tea exports to Iran have been suspended in the wake of trade sanctions imposed on Iran by the US, he noted.
Iran accounts for around 70 percent of Sri Lanka’s tea exports.
In a bid to make up for this potential loss, the government is holding talks with European countries to increase the number of exports, the ministry secretary said.
