Some London supermarkets have been hit by panic buying
Some residents of London appear to be working themselves into a frenzy with all the warnings of coronavirus and food shortages. If you have not ventured into a supermarket recently then you may think rumours of empty shelves are a load of old nonsense. However, pictures show that shelves across the capital are being stripped of some items. Items that the general public are fighting to get their hands on include toilet roll, pasta, pain killers and hand sanitisers. Health minister Matt Hancock has moved to reassure the public that there is "no need" for panic buying. He said the Government has stocks of "things that are needed" and is "confident" that the food supply will not be disrupted. On Monday, March 2 the Department of Health announced 39 people had tested positive for coronavirus in UK, while yesterday (March 7) the amount has risen to 206. In London the figure for confirmed coronavirus cases now stands at 38, which is an increase of 9 from official statistics released on Friday, March 6. Here are some pictures captured from across London that show the extent of panic buying.
