JEDB Chairman
Dr. Kapila Yakandawala was arrested last Friday (30), by the Peradeniya Police in relation to a case filed by a JEDB employee, who alleged that her EPF, ETF and Gratuity payments had not been paid to her.
A spokesperson for the Peradeniya Police said that in response to a case filed by the employee in a Court in Walapane, alleging that over Rs. 200,000, which was owed to her had not been paid, a warrant had been issued against the Chairman.
Internal sources of the JEDB said that more than 130 cases have been filed in various Courts in the country against the JEDB Chairman, by its employees in connection with the non-payment of
Rs 885 million as EPF, ETF and Gratuity payments from the year 2000 to date.
JEDB employees had complained to the HRCSL about this matter too.
All employees of the JEDB, the State Plantations Corporation (SPC) and Elkaduwa Plantations have to be paid ETF, EPF and Gratuity amounting to
Rs 1,888 million in total. While Rs 885 million has to be paid by the JEDB, the SPC owes Rs 664 million rupees and Elkaduwa Plantations has to pay a sum of Rs 339 million.
All three of these institutions, which are government owned, come under the Minister Lakshman Kiriella.
JEDB employees alleged that due to poor administration and inefficiency the company has been recording losses over many years.
