Total tea exports during the period January-August 2021 rose to 187.57 million kilos showing an increase of 13.43 million kilos over the same period last year. Total tea exports from January to August 2020 was 174.14 million kilos.
In addition Bulk Tea, Tea Bags and Packeted Tea have shown an increase compared to the corresponding period of 2020. FOB value of Rs. 927.21 records an increase of Rs. 68.96 compared to Rs. 858.25 of January-August 2020. Sri Lanka exported 25.48 million kilos of tea in August 2021, an increase of 3.47 million kilos over the same month last year, which was 22.01 million kilos of tea.
Bulk Tea and Packeted Tea categories also showed growth whilst Tea Bags have shown a marginal decrease as compared to the corresponding period of 2020. “FOB value of Rs. 917.20 records an increase of Rs. 52.21 compared to Rs. 864.99 of August 2020. Although total Rupee FOB value has increased in 2021, in USD terms it reflects a lower value”, according to data from Forbes and Walker Tea Brokers.
Iraq has emerged at the No. 1 position as the major importer of Ceylon Tea, followed by Turkey and Russia with the U.A.E. moving up to the fourth position having increased imports significantly (203% YoY). Iran, which has moved down to the sixth position from the fourth position it occupied in 2020, records a fairly significant decrease (18% YoY) in imports during January- August 2021.
