History of Ceylon Tea

Sri Lanka’s tea production for July 2024 totalled 22.89 m/kgs, recording an increase of 1.32 m/kgs vis-à-vis 21.57 m/kgs of July 2023, Forbes & Walker Research said.

High and Medium Grown elevations have recorded an increase, while the Low Grown elevation saw a marginal decline of 0.45 m/kgs in comparison with the corresponding month of 2023.

Compared to 19.92 m/kgs of July 2022, the corresponding month shows an increase of 2.97 m/kgs.

However January-July 2024 cumulative production totalled 150.49 m/kgs, recording a decrease of 5.74 m/kgs vis-à-vis 156.23 m/kgs of January-July 2023.

January-July 2024 cumulative exports totalled 140.47 m/kgs, recording an increase of 5.48 m/kgs vis-à-vis 134.99 m/kgs of January-July 2023. Tea Packets, Instant Tea and Green Tea have recorded negative variances, whilst Tea in Bulk and Tea Bags have shown positive variances against the same period of the previous year.

Iraq ranks at No. 01 amongst major importers of Ceylon Tea with a total of 17.84 m/kgs, a marginal decline of 2% YoY in January-July 2024 against the previous year’s 18.29 m/kgs, whilst Russia at 2 nd place has witnessed an increase of 6% YoY with 15.02 m/kgs vis-à-vis 14.23 m/kgs recorded in 2023.

The U.A.E with 14.08 m/kgs (50% increase YoY) followed by Türkiye (10.59m/kgs), Iran (7.05 m/kgs) and China (6.89 m/kgs) have been cited as other notable importers of Ceylon Tea in the period of January-July 2024.
