People promote green tea detox as one of the easiest ways to cleanse the body, boost energy and improve overall health. Others say the approach can also help clear up blemishes, enhance immune function and promote weight loss.
It is easy to apply to your lifestyle since drinking green tea does not require any major modifications to your diet. However, some people still hesitate to detox with green tea because it may be another unsafe and ineffective fad diet.
Despite wide use across the world, little research is available to explain the effects of the green tea detox. We came up with this report to help you understand the benefits as well as the potential bad effects of taking green tea daily.
Green Tea Detox: Health Benefits
Helps in fat burning
One study showed that green tea extract could increase the body’s fat-burning ability by 17 percent in adults. Green tea also provides other compounds, including catechins, that could decrease body weight and support weight loss maintenance, according to Healthline.
Blocks disease
The compound epigallocatechin-3-gallate found in green tea helps prevent cancer cells from developing in the liver, prostate and lungs. Drinking green tea may also help lower the risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
Green Tea Detox: The Bad Effects
High in caffeine
At least 8 ounces of green tea provides up to 35 mg of caffeine. Drinking three to six cups of green tea per day could give the body significantly high amount of caffeine, which has been linked to anxiety, digestive problems, high blood pressure and sleep disturbances.
Bad nutrient absorption
Green tea contains the polyphenols EGCG and tannins that could block absorption of micronutrients in the body. The tea also lowers iron absorption.
No long-term effects
Some experts said that green tea detox is unnecessary for detoxification. It requires a long-term, regular intake to see benefits but it may only result in small and short-term changes in the body, like weight loss.
Green tea should be considered only as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle, not a key player in your body cleansing goals.
