The world market demand for 'Ceylon Tea' is on the decline following the announcement that the ban on glyphosate use will be lifted, says the Tea Smallholders Association.
Smallholders, who produce 79 per cent of the total tea exports, say that the prices too, have decreased as a result.
National organizer of their association Lal Premanath alleges a few tea companies got politicians to lift the ban in order to maximize their profits.
However, smallholders do not need to use glyphosate, he says, adding that what is required is good quality inorganic or organic fertilizer only.
Premanath adds that they want the ban to remain and cultivators provided fertilizer at concessionary rates instead.
