The tea industry recorded the highest national sales average for a calendar year in 2022, with the January to December 2022 cumulative average reaching Rs.1,234.24.
>The 2022 cumulative average is an increase of Rs.618.80 (US $ 3.13) when compared with the corresponding month of the previous year.
In US dollar terms, the average of US $ 4.11 recorded in the year 2017 remains the highest.
The national sales average for the High-Grown teas for the year reached Rs.1,093.10 (US $ 3.40), compared to Rs.587.13 (US $ 2.98) in 2021.
The Medium-Growns averaging Rs.1,030.82 (US $ 3.20) showed an increase as well when compared with Rs.550.80 in 2021.
The Low-Growns showed the highest increase, with the national sales average for the elevation reaching Rs.1339.86, compared to Rs.644.23 in 2021.
The analysis by Forbes & Walker Tea Brokers showed that the cumulative averages recorded increases for all elevations in US dollar terms when compared with 2021, amid sharp depreciation of the Sri Lankan rupee and lower tea output.
