Cabinet this week gave approval to provide Rs. 600 million to develop the plantation sector. The Cabinet paper presented by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe received approval on Tuesday.
As per the Cabinet paper, Rs. 600 million will be released from the Treasury to fund identified development strategies in the plantation sector, the Government Information Department said in a short statement.
Cabinet also approved a Cabinet paper submitted by Plantations Minister Navin Dissanayake to name sugar cane as a major plantation crop to meet the national sugar cane requirement in 2020.
